Audi 80 x-contact relay
I have an old Audi 80 - year model 1987 - still going strong, but I have one problem:
Sometimes - usually after driving more than an hour - it refuses to start again. It doesn't make any sound.
Then after maybe half an hour it starts normally.
It is quite unpleasant because I have no idea, why it does that ( =doesn't start)
I have a new starter, new cables to the starter, new ignition key system...
After replacing practically everything between the ignition key and the starter motor I found a relay, which is called "relief terminal relay".
Somebody told me that it is also so called x-contact relay, which has many purposes.
Could anybody tell me the meaning of this relay?
Could it be the cause for that mysterious starting problem?
It would be nice know if somebody else has had this problem...

Hi,
You may have a problem with an inhibitor switch wich will allow you to start only in the park position.
This switch is operated by the gear change lever.
There could be a mechanical or electrical problem with this switch.

Hi ..Is this car automatic or manual, either on modal on the right hand side of the engine bay look on the front of the tower of the suspension strut, about 200mm down from the top and you will see a connector.Check it and make sure it is clean ,if so when the fault reappears check check for voltage at this point,if no voltage is found and it is an auto refer to Don\'s comment and also check the instrumet cluster to see if all the functions are working .If they are not in order replace the ignition switch unit. This exactle the same fault that I had in my own 1989 audi 2e
