ECU upgrade/replacement

Greetings.
Anyone know whether the Simos ECU in the 1998 Passat B5 with a 1.6L engine can be replaced with another ECU (such as the Motronics?)

Mine is starting to act up and has recently refused to let itself be reset by a VW dealer.

Also, I'd like an ECU that's remappable (have not found a single site that can remap the Simos 2)
