hi there just recently bought the sharan , could somebody tell me what the secondary air pump actually does ?

It's used to inject air into the exhaust gases to speed up the heating time of the cat a bit like an after burner! it only kicks in at start up for a short spell, I'm told you can run without it but if you remove it you need to stick a resistance across its plug so the ecu still see's it in place and working!

As Fredt says you can remove it, but plug up the holes, and put a 5w bulb or resistor in it's place across plug, or else it'll fail mot on emissions.
